BHL Group hosts a beach cleanup in recognition of

June 5, 2023

In recognition of World Environment Day and World Oceans Day, Banks Holdings Limited hosted a Beach cleanup along the Oistins area. Staff, members of the National Conservation Commission (NCC) and members of the Rotary Club of Barbados South participated in this venture under the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution.’

Safety & Environment Officer at Banks Breweries, Kelly-Ann Knight said plastic pollution is a huge challenge for the Caribbean. Land-based activities result in plastic waste being dumped in areas where it makes its way onto our beaches and into our ocean. These types of activities have contributed to us being ranked as the largest per capita plastic polluters in the world generating majority of the litter that ends up in the Caribbean sea.

Given this narrative and in recognition of World Environment Day and World Oceans Day, we saw an opportunity to use our platform to raise awareness regarding plastic pollution of our beaches and oceans.

Our oceans are our life, they generate most of the oxygen we breathe, regulate climate, support key economic sectors like tourism, agriculture, help to ensure food security, and protect and preserve our biodiversity e.g. coral reefs and marine turtles.

We collected in excess of 40 bags of waste from the beach between Oistins to Enterprise Beach; however, we acknowledge that a single beach clean-up will make a modest dent in the fight to beat plastic pollution. We believe that the greatest impact will be seen in changes to individual behavior. We at BHL make a pledge to continue to be involved in future initiatives like this to stimulate the attention of our locals and visitors alike and get them onboard in the thrust to beat plastic pollution and leverage our blue economy.”

The beach cleanup was not only focused on the beach and the sand, but on the environs of the beach since that litter usually ends up in the sea and affecting marine life.
