BHL Staff benefit from Wellness Month
THURSDAY, June 25th, 2015
In a series of events coordinated by the Human Resources Department, the month of activities saw staff hiking to Sailor Gully, St. Peter, counting their steps in the "Walk a Mile in my shoes" pedometer challenge and indulging in two Wellness Days.
Nurses were on site at subsidiaries in Newton and Pine Hill Dairy to conduct blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol tests as well as to offer helpful advice on weight management. Representatives from Surfside Wellness Centre and CrossFit IslandFit were also on hand to share tips on maintaining a healthy lifestyle with physical activity.
The Human Resources Department also invited massage therapists to provide neck, shoulder and scalp massages which proved to be popular with staff members. The BHL team was also treated to skin analyses and were given helpful advice on skin care techniques.
The "Walk a mile in my shoes" pedometer competition has also seen some staff members racking up as many as 90,000 steps per week for a chance to win a five hundred dollar gym membership. The winners of the competition are to be announced on July 3rd.
Susan Boyce, Human Resources Officer, BHL, said Wellness month was conceptualized to promote the importance of a healthy lifestyle, even in a corporate setting.
"As human beings and certainly as employees, we tend to lead sedentary lifestyles and often lack the time to take care of our bodies. For this reason, we decided to treat our staff and give them the opportunity to take advantage of services that they would otherwise have to take time out for or access after working hours."
BHL Wellness has been an activity on the BHL calendar since 2005.
The BHL Group is comprised of Banks (Barbados) Breweries Ltd., Barbados Bottling Co. Ltd., Banks Distribution Ltd. and Pine Hill Dairy.
